Happy belated Earth Day!
I know I'm a few days late to the party, but really, lets celebrate the Earth everyday! As a Earth Day gift, you can get my Simply Square Washcloth pattern for free below!

These washcloths or dishcloths (honestly, you can use them for anything - they're 100% cotton!) are one of my best sellers at markets and are reusable - my favorite!!
The pattern is beginner friendly, and is the perfect thing to start with because it's small, has few stitches, and is easy to tell when you drop a stitch!
What you'll need:
Size 4.5mm hook or hook needed to meet gauge
Darning Needle
About 70 yards of Size 4 100% Cotton (sample is made with Sugar n’ Cream)
Stitches Used:
Ch: chain
Sc: single croceht
Sl st: slip stitch
Linen/Moss Stitch: alternating sc and ch 1 across the row - described and broken down below
Gauge & Measurement:
4in x 4in: 19 st x 17 rows
Measures about 9" x 9"
Pattern:

Chain 40
Row 1: in the fourth chain from the hook, place a sc. *Ch 1, skip the next st, and sc into the one after that. Repeat * until the end of the row, being sure to end with a sc in the last ch space. (38 st - sc, ch 1 counts as 2 st)
Row 2: Chain 2 and turn work. This chain 2 will count as the first sc and ch1 of the row. Sc into the chain space between Row 1’s sc. *Ch 1 then place a sc in the next chain space. Repeat * to the end of the row, placing the last sc into the last ch space.
Repeat row 2 for 34 rows
After the last stitch of Row 34 ch 1. You will now be completing the border of the washcloth.
Sc down the side of the cloth, placing a sc in each row. Ch 1 and place a sc into the first space of the bottom edge. * Skip 1 st and sc in the next 3 stitches. Repeat * until the end of the row, ending with a sc in the last st of the row. Ch 1, and sc up the side of the cloth back to the top, placing a sc in each row. Once at the top, ch 1 and sc into the first st of the top. *skip the next st and then sc into the next 3 st. Repeat * until the end of the row, ending with a sc in the last st. Sl st to join to the beginning of the border.
Tie off and weave in ends. Be sure to weave in your ends well since this is a washcloth and may be handled roughly!
